All you need to know ...

The following information explains in more detail about how Kaj's live music and/or DJ set will work at your wedding, party or event. Please scroll down to the sections relevant to you. If you still have further questions after reading this page please contact Kaj and he'll be happy to help with your enquiry.

Additions

All prices stated on the individual Weddings & Events pages (except from Destination Weddings) are fully inclusive of any travel. The only possible additional fees you may incur are as follows, and Kaj will let you know if any of these when you make your enquiry:

- Parking and bridge tolls. Costs will be added to your final balance.

- Early setup. Kaj will arrive two hours before he is due to start playing. If you need him to setup earlier in the day then this may incur an additional fee.

- Hot meal. If Kaj is playing for more than one part of your day (e.g Drinks Reception, Wedding Breakfast & Evening Reception) then he may require a hot meal to be provided.

- Additional song requests. Couples often want to personalise their Ceremony by asking Kaj to learn additional songs that aren’t already on his Live Music Setlist. He will learn any song of your choice as long as he can make it work successfully both vocally and musically. Instrumentation will either be guitar or piano. Additional songs are often requested for the entrance and/or exit song. If requested, additional songs cost £60 each and they will be added to your final balance invoice.

Music Equipment

Kaj can bring either his full kit to your wedding, or a reduced kit (a portable amp) - perfect for those smaller Cornish venues! Using the portable amp means he can relocate himself easily - this can be great if you need him to move into a different area throughout your wedding day. Please note that for live performance perposes Kaj uses a mains powered stage piano. This cannot be battery operated and will require a mains electric supply to be powered.

FULL KIT
- microphone
- acoustic guitar
- electric piano
- public amplification - Bose L1 model 2. B1 & B2 bass module
- DJ kit - as listed below
- Lighting - as listed below

REDUCED KIT
- portable amp
- guitar
- microphone

DJ EQUIPMENT
So as not to take up unecessary space or distract from the live performance, Kaj's DJ equipment is minimal with kit set up on a small table. This doesn't mean that you get less of a performance, but having a massive black DJ booth often doesn't look particularly good! Less is more!

LIGHTING
2 X scanners which sit on the floor
4 X par can lights which hang down from a T-bar
2 X stage wash lights
1 X coloured moonbeam, floor mounted, effect scanner

Ceremony

How long is the set?
Kaj doesn't play continuously all the way through your ceremony, he splits it throughout (see details below). But overall it equates to roughly between 30 and 45 minutes of music.

How will the music be split throughout our ceremony?
How the music is split is your choice. However, a typical ceremony that Kaj plays looks a little like this:

• 5-6 songs as guests are ushered to their seats
• 1 song for the entrance
• 3 songs for the signing of the register
• 1 song for the married couple’s exit

Is all the music live?
Yes. All music and vocal are performed live with no backing tracks.

The song I’d love Kaj to play isn’t on his setlist, will he learn it?
Couples often want to personalise their ceremony by asking Kaj to learn additional songs that aren’t already on his Live Music Setlist. He will learn any song of your choice as long as he can make it work successfully both vocally and musically. Instrumentation will either be guitar or piano. Additional songs are often requested for the entrance and/or exit song, but could also be for the signing of the register. Additional songs cost £60 per song.

When do I confirm song choices for my ceremony?
If you're having a non-religious ceremony, your registrar will probably ask for your song choices at least 6 months before your wedding day. We request that you let us know your song choices before confirming with the registrar.

Do church ceremonies allow popular music?
Some churches only allow traditional hymns, so booking Kaj to play popular songs may not be suitable. Please check with whoever is conducting your service before confirming your booking with us.

I'm not sure if my venue allows amplification?
Kaj's electric piano requires amplification (speakers and mains electricity), but his guitar can be played acoustically (no amplification needed). Some venues don't allow amplification and therefore your song choices will need to be played on the guitar only. This is not a problem as Kaj can advise you on which songs will work best, but it's worth checking with whoever is conducting your service or the venue owner to see whether or not amplification is allowed.

Does Kaj play instrumental?
Kaj plays guitar and piano accompanied by his vocal. He doesn’t play instrumental because his style of playing is more pop than classical. Popular choices from his setlist are songs by artists such as Elton John, Crowded House, Jack Johnson, John Legend and Jason Mraz.

Does Kaj have all of his own equipment?
Yes, he has a PA system (Public Amplification) which is PAT tested (and a spare just incase!), and an LED lighting rig.

How long will Kaj need to set up his music equipment?
Minimum of 1 hour to set up and test equipment.

We’re having our Ceremony outside / in a marquee and there is no electricity supply. Will this be a problem?
If you have a small amount of guests (30 or 40) then Kaj could just play acoustic (no amplification). If you have many guests (40+) then he can use his battery powered amp. Please note that in both cases Kaj will only be able to use his guitar and not the electric piano. If you have a marquee set up in the grounds of a house it may be that we can run a long extension lead (20 metres) from the house into the marquee for full amplification. Then Kaj will be able to use both his guitar and electric piano. The extension lead must be plugged into it’s own power source and not shared with other electrical equipment. This is for safety reasons and also to protect Kaj and his music equipment. Please check licensing laws with your venue.

Does Kaj have Public Liability Insurance?
Yes, up to the value of £5,000,000.

Drinks Reception

How long is the set?
1.5 hours.

Is all the music live?
Yes. All music and vocal are performed live with no backing tracks.

Can we choose the songs Kaj will play?
You are most welcome to choose 5 or 6 of your favourite songs from his setlist which he will definitely include at your Drinks Reception. However, you may not specify songs from Kaj's setlist that he is not allowed to play, or choose the order in which he will play his songs.

A large part of what makes Kaj's live set so successful is not planning every song in advance. He knows which songs audiences react well to, and which songs sit well together to create a varied pace. Limiting the songs he plays will reduce his capability to entertain your guests to his full potential. Remember, it's likely that your guests will vary in age and their taste in music, and will often make requests. Keeping the setlist varied means you cater for everyone.

Does Kaj play instrumental?
He plays guitar and piano accompanied by his vocal. He doesn’t play instrumental because his style of playing is more pop than classical. Popular choices from his setlist are songs by artists such as Elton John, Crowded House, Jack Johnson, John Legend and Jason Mraz.

The song we’d like Kaj to play isn’t on his Live Music Setlist - will he learn it for us?

Yes, he will learn any song of your choice as long as he can make it work successfully both vocally and musically. Instrumentation will either be guitar or piano. The sooner you can let us know your choices the better, but we will be in touch three weeks before your wedding day to confirm. Additional songs cost £60 per song. Please note this fee does not apply to your first dance song (regardless of whether you choose one from Kaj's setlist or not).

Does Kaj have all of his own equipment?

Evening Reception

How long is the set?
2 hours.

Is all the music live?
Yes. All music and vocal are performed live with no backing tracks.

Can we choose the songs Kaj will play?
You are most welcome to choose 5 or 6 of your favourite songs from his setlist which he will definitely include at your Evening Reception. However, you may not specify songs from Kaj's setlist that he is not allowed to play, or choose the order in which he will play his songs (apart from your first dance song of which you may want to choose a particular point during your Evening Reception for him to perform this).

Will Kaj perform our first dance song live?
Yes - it can be a song that is already on his Live Music Setlist or one you'd like him to learn especially for you (at no extra fee). People often feel awkward about their first dance, and although you may have everyone's eyes on you, it's your moment with your loved one, friends and family - enjoy it!

Your first dance song can be performed on the guitar or piano and accompanied by Kaj's vocal. You may or may not already have a song that is 'yours'.  Don't overthink or overanalyse the lyrics, just goe with go with what feels right. Even if it's a fast and lively tune, any song can be slowed down and adapted to suit the occasion.

Can we hear a recording of our first dance song before our wedding day?
Unfortuntely Kaj cannot offer this service due to his busy schedule and numerous bookings for weddings each year. We appreciate that it's a special moment for couples and Kaj will always take time to make sure that your first dance song is perfect.

Does Kaj play instrumental?

Kaj plays guitar and piano accompanied by his vocal. He doesn’t play instrumental because his style of playing is more pop than classical. Popular choices from his setlist are songs by artists such as Pharrell, The Lumineers, 10cc and even Dolly Parton amongst many others.

Will Kaj take a break during the 2 hour Live Set?
No, he plays straight through to keep the party atmosphere going, unless you request otherwise.

Does Kaj have all of his own equipment?
Yes, he has a PA (Public Amplification) which is PAT tested (and a spare just incase!) and an LED lighting rig.

How long will Kaj need to set up his music equipment?
He will arrive approximately 2 hours before the performance time and will require a minimum of 1 hour to set up and test equipment. At an extra cost it’s possible for him to set up in the morning or around lunchtime if the venue requires this.

Stage Area
• A flat surface/stage area is required for Kaj's music equipment. This area must be clear of any debris, and be dry.
• An electrical point will be required. The extension lead must be plugged into it’s own power source and not shared with other electrical equipment. This is for safety reasons and also to protect Kaj and his music equipment. Please check licensing laws with your venue.
 • All stage areas must be at least 8' X 8' and must be close to the edge of a room or marquee (i.e not central in a room or an area where guests can walk behind him and his equipment).

Can we use Kaj’s PA for speeches?
Yes, but due to many variables we price this individually. For more details please contact us.

Will Kaj play a shorter set than 2 hours?
We have a minimum fee for 2 hours for the evening reception. Kaj can play for less time if you wish, but the fee will remain the same.

Does Kaj have Public Liability Insurance?
Yes, up to the value of £5,000,000.

DJ Set (for weddings, parties & events)

How long is the DJ set?
The DJ set is two hours long and can only be booked in addition to the 2 hour live music set. Some venues do not allow loud music as late as 12am so be sure to check your venue's music curfew time before you book with us.

Do you have lighting equipment?
Yes - an LED lighting rig.

We don’t really mind what music is played, will Kaj pick the songs for us?
Yes, we have an extensive music library from the 1950s to present day and you can trust Kaj to play a good variety to suit all of your guests.

Can we send you a list of our song requests?
Kaj plays around thirty tunes during this two hour set. You can tell us all thirty songs, a handful of your faves, genres of music you would like played, or simply nothing at all. You don’t need to send us the actual music, just email us a list of song names and artists as we have an extensive music library. Any songs we don’t have we’ll purchase at no extra charge to you.

We have our own music. Can we play our iPod through Kaj’s equipment?
Yes, but the usual DJ set fee still applies. This is because Kaj has to set up all of the DJ equipment, be available in case of any technical problems and dismantle it again at the end of the night.

Can we split the DJ set?
Yes, this can work really well. Often Kaj is asked to play 1 hour of the DJ set to warm up the guests, then play his 2 hour live set, then continue with the final hour of the DJ set to finish. Typically, this arrangement can work very well.

Can we book Kaj for the DJ set only?
We only offer the DJ service in addition to the 2 hour live set. We can almost guarantee that the live set is the part people will remember and the DJ set is just to keep the party atmosphere going!

Can we book a shorter DJ set than 2 hours?
We have a minimum fee for 2 hours. Kaj can play for less time if you wish, but the fee will remain the same.

Can we book a longer DJ set?
Yes, extra playing time is charged at £50 per 30 minutes.

Does Kaj have Public Liability Insurance?
Yes, up to the value of £5,000,000.
